We got a new look around here at Had a Few Beers — a complete redesign of the graphics! If the old ones look like they were designed by a retarded drunken monkey that’s because I did them.
In honor of this grand unveiling, I’ve asked the designer to talk about them and how he came up with the concept. I’m going to shut up now…
Here are a few words from the author of Oh God, My Wife Is German, regarding the new logo and banner images:
Todd contacted me back in June and asked if I would be interested in designing a logo for his blog, www.hadafewbeers.com. I jumped at the opportunity because Todd has been a supportive and enthusiastic reader of www.ohgodmywifeisgerman.com since I launched it back in August of 2011. We had excellent rapport — I already knew he was an honest guy — but I also knew he was funny and laid-back (he starts every email with the word “Dude…”), so he would make for an excellent client. And he absolutely was.
He sent me the money via PayPal before I’d even started working on the logo. (Normally, I ask for half up front so I don’t get screwed.) This showed me Todd knew I was also an honest person, which is yet another positive aspect of working for one of my blog readers; they already kind of know me. Anyway, I sent Todd a list of questions, which he answered hilariously, and that got things started. Here’s an example of our dialogue:
ME: “If your logo were a drunk at a bar, would it be a sloppy drunk, a classy drunk or a crazy drunk? (Think Charles Bukowski, Peter O’Toole or Hunter S. Thompson.)”
TODD: “Well, you nailed my favorite authors. ARE YOU HACKING ME?!?! Bukowski with a hint of Thompson. Throw in an edge of Hemmingway’s A Clean, Well-Lighted Place and maybe it’s perfect.”
So with these creative prompts, I began design work on his new logo. I tried to hold back and only come up with three versions, but I couldn’t resist; logo work is so much fun I almost always get carried away. I finalized seven or eight designs, but I wanted to make sure Todd had only the very strongest to choose from. I wanted both of us to be happy no matter which one he selected. And once again, we were in sync as he chose the logo I also thought best. I am very happy with the final design, and I know he is as well. I think it communicates the nature and content of his blog in an instant — the way an effective logo should.
After the logo, Todd asked if I wanted to design some banner images for his blog. I came up with 6 versions and he chose the best one there as well.
I would absolutely work with Todd again in the future. In fact, I would welcome any and all WordPress bloggers to contact me regarding graphic design work. Logos, websites, business cards, brochures — print or web — I do it all. I also provide social media, copywriting and editing services. If you’d like an estimate, don’t hesitate to email me.
Todd, thank you for the opportunity to design your logo and banner image. It’s been a real pleasure, buddy, and I look forward to working with you again soon.
